Emily Lunceford

Since graduating from Drexel University in 2012 and being offered a promotion to Digital Technology Librarian at Manlius Library, I have been involved with NYLA. The support of the organization statewide allows all of us to serve our constituents well. The SMART section has been beneficial to me in my role at our medium-sized, Library Journal Star-recognized public library, which serves a vibrant suburban community in upstate New York. From helping seniors learn their way around iPads to managing and maintaining the library’s IT infrastructure, I’m always eager to learn as much as possible about emerging technology trends in libraries as well as best practices. During my time at Manlius, I have increased patron technology support times, offered monthly digital literacy workshops on a variety of topics, helped the library transition to a modern website, designed and authored a monthly email newsletter, and more. One of my more robust projects was the management of an IT overhaul including our incoming broadband connection and setup of an internal network for which I now serve as network administrator. It’s both fascinating and exciting to watch how public libraries are changing their roles in the community while maintaining their core values. I’ve been a member of the SMART section since the fall of 2013. I’m interested in leadership opportunities and look forward to supporting SMART through the Board position of Secretary.
