SMART President’s Message for 2009

Posted by Ken Fujiuchi on August 14, 2009

It was late 2002 when then President Diane Berry welcomed me to the SMART board and I have been hanging around ever since, serving in different capacities. Through SMART I was afforded many opportunities to learn new skills and met a few people that I could call upon with questions about my everyday work. Most importantly I made lifelong friends. What does SMART mean to you? Is it an organization that provides you with valuable workshops and conference programs that enrich your work and further your professional development? It is a place to connect with colleagues from around the state? Whatever SMART means to you, I hope you will take the opportunity to make the most of your membership and help shape the organization. Get involved! Volunteer to serve on the board, tell us what kinds of conference programs and workshops you want to see, or volunteer at the conference booth for an hour and meet fellow SMARTies. There will be many opportunities at this year’s annual conference in Niagara Falls and I guarantee you will have fun. SMARTies always do.

Speaking of Niagara Falls, SMART President Elect and this year’s conference programmer Marcy Strong and her assistant programmers Sarah Maximiek and Zahra Baird have been working hard this year to bring you programs such as Websites on a Budget, Developing Records Management Policies, and Procedures, and Emerging Technology Trends for Librarians. I also hope you will join us for the SMART membership meeting as come unwind and mingle at our section reception (stay tuned for details). See you in Niagara Falls!

Some librarians may be given responsibility for implementing a modest records management program in their library or parent organization.  Initially, the librarian, acting as a records manager may begin records management improvements with enthusiasm, but over time the librarian will begin to lose control of the organizationˇs records and the records management systems which were put in place will begin to regress. Often this is caused by a lack of adequate records management policies and procedures, or a situation where those procedures are not followed. This presentation will focus on:

  • The value of documenting policies and procedures
  • How to develop policies and procedures and make sure they are followed
  • How to keep policies up to date and relevant

The web is a 20 years old this year, and we are still in the process of realizing its full potential. Nascent in the original design of the World Wide Web as proposed by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 is the idea of building a vast distributed database, not only of documents, but of things as well. In 2001 this vision was christened the Semantic Web, and in 2006 the grassroots Linked Data effort began to put the ideas and technologies to practical use. In this talk I will talk about the progress the Linked Data movement have made in the past 3 years, the role that libraries can play in this information environment, and the efforts at the Library of Congress is making to play its part.

Ed Summers, Library of Congress

NYLA Institute – Web Design: Introduction to CSS

Posted by Ken Fujiuchi on July 22, 2009

The New York Library Association is pleased to announce the latest Continuing Education opportunity:

Friday, November 13, 2009

10:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Nassau Library System | Uniondale, NY

Why do some websites look amazingly professional while others appear like they were designed in Microsoft Word? Much has changed since the early days of the internet. Whether you want to bring a more modern look to your website or customize a WordPress theme, every detail of the appearance of a page is controlled by Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). This “hands on” institute will give you experience with key concepts and software tools that will help you begin using CSS with your HTML.

Prerequisite: basic knowledge of HTML

This is a hands-on workshop. Registration is limited to 19 participants to enable each attendee access to a computer workstation.

About the Presenter:

Luke Charde, a freelance web developer and technology trainer, has been involved in the design of scores of websites since the early days of the web. He enjoys helping people learn to use the ever-changing world of technology for better organizational and personal effectiveness. Because of Luke’s background in the educational field, he is adept at communicating technological concepts in an understandable manner and providing the tools and resources to enable continued learning.

Registration Note:
Preregistration is required. Space is limited. Registration is completed when your payment arrives at NYLA. You will be contacted by NYLA only if the workshop is filled. This will be a hands-on workshop.

This full-day workshop is $100 for NYLA members and $130 for non-members.

Call for Nominations!

Posted by Ken Fujiuchi on May 20, 2009

The SMART Board is an excellent way to become involved in NYLA. Please consider nominating yourself or another SMART member for one of three openings:

  • The Vice-president/President-elect position is a three-year commitment. The first year is spent coordinating SMART’s conference programs, the second year as section President and a member of the NYLA Council, and the third year coordinating nominations for officers and awards.
  • The Director-at-Large position is a great way to get committee experience and learn how NYLA works. The Director-at-Large attends section board meetings (4/year + conference), participates in conference planning, and votes on the actions of the section. This is a three year term running from 2009 to 2012.
  • The SMART Treasurer is responsible for coordinating the section’s finances in cooperation with NYLA’s Accounting Manager. This is a two year term.

The nomination DEADLINE is May 29th. Email nominations and any questions to: Kathryn Frederick kfrederi@skidmore.edu
