SMART President’s Message – Spring 2007

Dear SMARTies,
Looking out the window of my office here in the Finger Lakes region, I’m delighted to finally see the grass again after months of winter weather! The snow is easing up and calendars are filling up with a variety of workshops and training sessions taking place across New York this spring.
As SMART members look at the variety of opportunities available, anyone looking for assistance with basic cataloging skills or a cataloging refresher course will want to make sure Cataloging 411 or, “How I learned that catalogers are NOT trying to make my life difficult” is on the calendar. Attendees will learn cataloging first-hand from seasoned catalogers (and SMARTies) Maggie Horn and John Myers. Repeating their successful workshop first presented at the 2006 NYLA Conference in Saratoga Springs, Cataloging 411 combines presentation with hands-on exercises and is sure to include SMART’s famous humor and fun! The workshop will be held May 9th at the Pioneer Library System in Canandaigua. Registration form is available through our Spring 2007 issue of SMART News and Notes.
Looking forward to this year’s NYLA Conference, make SMART programs the smart choice! This year’s SMART line-up emphasizes hot new technologies libraries and library staff are facing, choosing, and employing. Go beyond blog basics and expand your library’s online presence with It Came from the Blog! and take a 2.0 approach to information organization with Social Bookmarking and Tagging. Nylink’s Lynne Graziadei is back for a second year and will follow up last year’s metadata program with an in-depth look at Encoded Archival Description in Accessible Archives: EAD. Open Source Software and its future in libraries takes center stage as this year’s Rudi Weiss lecturer, Edward Corrado from The College of New Jersey, presents The Library is Now… Open! SMART Board members from libraries and library systems across the states are hard at work on these and other initiatives, including NYLA membership, legislative and advocacy issues, and the creation of the SMART archives. We always look forward to meeting more of the SMART membership and hope to see many of you this May in Canandaigua!
