About the Program
As a new standard for resource description and access designed for the digital world and as the successor to AACR2, RDA will provide:
- a flexible framework for describing digital (and all other) resources
- data that is readily adaptable to newly emerging database structures
- data that is compatible with existing records in online library catalogs.
Is it possible to develop a new cataloging standard that can serve the needs of emerging metadata communities as well as those of more traditional library cataloging? Could such a standard be accepted internationally but also adaptable to the needs of a single institution?
This session will describe international efforts underway to develop RDA, the relationship of RDA to other standards (including AACR2), and how library cataloging will be affected when RDA is implemented in 2008 or 2009.
About the presenter
Jennifer Bowen is Head of Cataloging, University of Rochester, and ALA representative to the Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR.
